Today, October 14, 2015, King Fahd University Hospital received Joint Commission International’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Academic Medical Center Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its internationally recognized standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

The University Hospital underwent a rigorous on-site survey from September 13-17, 2015 where a team of Joint Commission International (JCI) experts evaluated the hospital’s compliance with academic medical center hospital standards in several areas, including: International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG), patient assessment and care, anesthesia and surgical care, medication management, patient and family education, quality improvement, infection prevention and control, governance and leadership, facility management, staff qualifications and education, information management, medical professional education and human subject research.

Paul Chang, MD, MBA, MPH, CPHQ, FACHE, Vice President of Accreditation, Standards and Measurement of JCI stated that, “JCI accreditation provides academic medical center hospitals with the processes that contribute to improvements in a variety of areas, from the enhancement of staff education to the demonstration of leading practices within the academic medical center setting.”  He also noted that, “We commend King Fahd University Hospital for its efforts in becoming a quality improvement organization and by achieving this pinnacle, which strongly demonstrates a commitment to patient safety and quality.”

Al Rubaish, President of the University of Dammam, Supervisor General of King Fahd University Hospital, stated that, "King Fahd University Hospital is pleased to receive accreditation from Joint Commission International, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the world. Staff from across the organization continue to work together to develop and implement approaches and strategies that have the potential to improve care for the patients in our community.”

JCI’s academic medical center hospital standards are developed in consultation with worldwide health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The standards are informed by scientific literature and consensus of experts to help organizations measure, assess and improve performance.
