Department of Academic Affairs and Training
The Department of Academic Affairs and Training provides services and programs which are vital in the development of the skills and performances of employees in the medical field. In addition, this department effectevely contributes to the educational process of the students in the Colleges of Medicine, Applied Medical Sciences, Nursing and Dentistry at the University of Dammam as well other universities, colleges and institutes throughout the Kingdom.
The Department of Academic Affairs and Training consists of the following divisions:
Continuing Professional Development
The Office of Continuing Professional Development offers courses, seminars, conferences and scientific workshops in conjunction with relevant authorities and coordinates with various medical departments at the University Hospital, the University and other institutions.
This office offers on average over 50 activities a year, including: training courses, seminars, lectures and workshops. Attendees come from a broad spectrum of occupations within the health care sector.
The External Training division is a training center that offers rigorous training to Health care professionals and students. The training courses offered include the following topics: X-ray, pharmacy, medical supply, medical records, secretarial medical management in hospitals, computer finance, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, nursing, nutrition, diagnostic laboratories, intensive care and training in an emergency room just to name a few.
These training courses have a significant impact on the health of not only the local community in the Eastern Province, but also have an impact Kingdom wide, since students and health care professionals from both public and private sectors are involved. A sample of participants includes: medical staff, assistantants, medical and allied health sciences students, including trainees of the Saudi Red Crescent Society and students from the Institute of Public Administration, military health care professionals, UD students from throughout the University as well as students from King Saud University, King Abdul Aziz University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, King Khalid University and the Saudi Ministry of Health
The traing courses also offer experience in hospital wards were appropriate and give the trainees an opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop their skills and abilities. Typically this office trains approximately 400 individuals a year.
This office focuses on developing the skills of the Personnel Department of the hospital and the nursing technicians in addition to training new employees and trainees in the hospital.
Educational Assistance Services
This office provides the following education related services:
- Audio-visual media
- Reservation and processing services for halls and classrooms
- Television broadcasting
This office provides services for all educational activities and courses for students, including seminars and symposia. This office coordinates the use of classrooms and halls and is responsible for broadcasting three television channels, inlcuding: a channel dedicated to Islamic culture, one for children's programming and one channel that is focused on health education. The Educational Assistance Services Department also also produces films; documenting medical conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops as well as visits from distinquished guests.
The Medical Imaging office is responsible for all photographic services at the hospital, from images used for education and research to those used in publications and at conferences.
Department of Translation
The Department of Translation was established when the hospital was first opened in 1981 and provides translation and interpretation services to all departments of the hospital, including the translation of medical reports, birth and death certificates, circulars, letters, management reports, reports of services, invoices, specifications, marriage contracts, educational and scientific certificates. Interpretation services for some government agencies, such as the police and the courts, are also performed if non-Arabic speakers are involved.
Department of Health Education
The Department of Health Education was orignially established in October 1994 and began by providing health education services to patients in the hospital. Now this department prepares and organizes community health fairs and participates in various events in the region, from charity events, summer programs as well as making presentations at local schools. This department also works with students interested in the area of health education and runs a private outpatient health education clinic that focuses on diabetes.
The Medical Library was established in 1983 in order to provide services to employees of the hospital, university faculty members and students of the colleges of medicine, nursing and applied medical sciences. In addition to a vast collection of medical related texts and references, the library also includes a special section of books dedicated to Islamic theology and thought. The Library suscribes to approximately 40 journals in the nursing field alone and has state-of-the-art resources for reference books and scientific publications. Users can access countless scientific journals through the Horizon program, or search for texts at institutions such as the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh and other academic institutions in the Gulf States.
The Office of Design is responsible for desigining all of the publications and printed matter that the University Hospital generates, from designing programs and brochures for symposia or designing posters for an event.
